There is a quiet that arrives before the world wakes up — a thin space where you can hear your own breath, the hum of the refrigerator, and, if you listen long enough, the whisper of God.

I sat with my coffee this morning and watched the light change outside the kitchen window. It started gray, then gold, then this honeyed amber that only lasts about four minutes. I almost missed it because I was scrolling. Almost.

The discipline of slowing down

We talk a lot about prayer as if it's something we have to do — a task to check off, words to perform. But more and more, I think prayer is mostly about noticing. Noticing the light. Noticing the breath. Noticing the ache in your chest that you've been ignoring for three weeks.

"Be still, and know that I am God."

— Psalm 46:10

Be still. That's the whole instruction. Not do more. Not strive harder. Just be still — and in the stillness, knowing comes.

A small practice for today

Before you open another app, before you reply to another message, try this:

  • Set a timer for three minutes.
  • Put your phone face down.
  • Breathe in slowly for a count of four. Out for a count of six.
  • Don't ask God for anything. Just sit. Let Him look at you.

That's it. Three minutes. You'll be amazed what surfaces in three minutes of honest stillness.

If this resonated with you today, would you share it with one person who needs to slow down? Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is hand someone a quiet moment.

With love and a warm cup of coffee,
Pastor Connie
